Philodendron devansayeanum
Philodendron devansayeanum is a spectacular tropical climbing aroid admired for its large, glossy, heart-shaped foliage and bold jungle character. Native to Peru and also found in tropical regions of Colombia and Ecuador, this species is highly prized by collectors for its dramatic foliage and elegant growth habit. It was scientifically described by Lucien Linden in 1895, adding botanical and historical significance to this remarkable species.
One of the most outstanding features of Philodendron devansayeanum is its striking new growth color. Fresh emerging leaves unfurl in a deep red to reddish-bronze tone, creating a vivid contrast against the mature foliage, which gradually hardens into a rich bright glossy green. This color transition gives the plant exceptional ornamental appeal and makes each new leaf a true highlight in any collection.
In its natural habitat, this species grows as a hemiepiphytic climber, using aerial roots to attach itself to trees and ascend toward the forest canopy. With proper support, it can develop into a vigorous and architectural specimen with an unmistakable tropical presence.
Its foliage is coriaceous, broad, and luminous, combining substance, shine, and elegant structure. As it matures, the plant becomes increasingly impressive, making it an excellent choice for collectors who appreciate rare Philodendrons with both botanical interest and strong visual appeal.
This species thrives in bright indirect light, warm temperatures, high humidity, and a loose, well-draining substrate rich in organic matter. Under favorable conditions, it rewards growers with lush, vigorous growth and spectacular foliage development.
A rare and refined species with true rainforest character, Philodendron devansayeanum is an exceptional addition to any serious aroid collection.
