Anthurium oblitum is a fascinating species formally described only in 2022 by botanist Thomas B. Croat. Its specific epithet, oblitum, comes from Latin and means “forgotten,” referring to the fact that it was long overlooked because it had been confused with Anthurium betsyae. It is an epiphytic aroid with long, coriaceous, dark green matte leaves borne on slender petioles, and it is often grown in an airy mix of moss and bark.

This species is endemic to Peru, known only from the Department of Loreto along the road between Tarapoto and Yurimaguas, just after the tunnel, in premontane wet forest below 500 meters. Although the plant in the image is young, mature specimens produce a striking inflorescence with a dark violet to purple spadix, a distinctive trait within the genus. As an epiphyte, it naturally grows on trees rather than in soil, which explains its need for a very well-aerated substrate in cultivation.

The type specimen was collected on July 16, 2012, by T.B. Croat (number 59633A) and is deposited as the holotype at the Missouri Botanical Garden (MO). Today, Anthurium oblitum is cultivated under controlled conditions, where it requires high humidity and a substrate that mimics its natural epiphytic environment. It remains a remarkable example of Peru’s rich biodiversity and of how many tropical species are still waiting to be discovered, understood, and properly named.
